I conducted audience research for my Glam Rock magazine, Crüe, with the help of websites Survey monkey and facebook, through survey monkey i was able to create my very own survey and i was able to publish it on facebook to get people to answer it.
I thought carefully about what my survey should contain, i realized that i already had a set idea of the editorial content within the magazines after looking at many examples, so i put more questions about products and suchlike in the survey so i had a definite idea of what could be advertised in my magazine since i predict that majority of profit will come from selling advertising space.
As you can see i turned all the info i got into 6 Pie charts, some info was not suitable to be used in a pie chart so i did not bother, but i haven't ruled that information out as it is still very important.
Although i got some good results from the pie charts the core informations that's displayed isn't what i need to get an accurate view of the opinions and likes of my target audience.
I used the question that asks what their favorite music Genre's are as a guideline, going on the basis that my target audience will most definitely enjoy Rock and Metal music as with other magazines of similar style like Classic Rock.
I took the information and put it into a handy chart as you can see.
    Weekly income of £20+
Attended gigs more than 5 times a year
All attended Pub gigs, whist 9 attended Festivals or smaller venues.
Spend less than £20 on clothing a month
Like Criminal Damage and Converse clothing
4 already subscribe or buy regularly a rock music magazine of some sort
All spend less than £10 a month on magazines
11 people out of the 12 that took the survey liked rock music, so were possible buyers for my magazine. I eliminated that 1 who wasn't.
From the chart we can tell a few things straight off, my target audience have a weekly income of at least £20, this means we can be somewhat lenient as to what we advertise in our magazine, safe in the knowledge that readers won't be put off by the price of products advertised, or even the magazine itself.
Each person also attended 5 or more music gigs/festivals a year, this tells us that they probably would be interested if they saw adverts selling tickets to their favorite bands, the next statement tells us that they are mostly interest in local smaller gigs and large festivals, this means we can narrow down what to advertise, also what sort of show reviews readers would be interested in reading within the magazine.
We're then told they spend less than £20 a month on clothing, despite knowing this we know that they have the money to spend more if they wished, so we could put in clothing ad's that could persuade them to want to spend more but we must be careful about it.
2 brands that came up frequently when asked what do you like were Criminal Damage and Converse, this gives us two straight up ideas of what brands that could be advertised within the magazine.
Only 4 we're told actually buy a rock magazine regularly, this is disturbing seeing as it's less than %40 of the people surveyed. This might mean we need to persuade more people into subscribing or staying loyal to my magazine, this could include offering freebies as cover mounts or as thank you's for subscribing, including physical items or even discounts when subscribing.
